While at Dulce Refugio, we worked with the kids and leaders to paint a mural on one of the walls of the new building. It was a blast!
After buying the oil paint, thinner, and some cheap brushes at the local paint store we were ready to take on the 10'x13' wall that would mark just the first in a series of murals on the first floor of the new school at Dulce Refugio. Nate did the design with the help of Cecilia, the pastor, and some of the leaders. With the help of the church's new projector and Nate's computer, we were able to project the scanned drawing right on the wall and trace the outlines.
The students, the student-leaders, and our friends from Georgia who came for a short visit did most of the painting, and they were really enjoying themselves. Tracing the outlines on the walls only took a few hours, after which we were ready for lunch.
We came back a week and a half later to do the coloring. It took a little bit longer but it was way more fun, mixing paint and coloring on such a large scale, and watching the mural emerge before our eyes. The students and the student-leaders did most of the painting, and we were all having fun. We had to quit and pack up when it started getting dark, but we returned two days later to finish the job.
We hope to someday come back and help with the painting of at least two more murals of the same size that will link together to finish the scene. Until then, Manases, the artist of the group and the pastor's son, is in charge to continue the work we all started together.
